NY's Libraries: Essential

February 2010--

Help us protect NY’s libraries and library systems! We need to tell the NYS Legislature to reject the $2.4 million cut in Library Aid Governor David Paterson is proposing in the 2010-2011 Executive Budget.

This will be the fifth cut in less than two years and will bring Library Aid down from $102 million in 2007 to $84.5 million in 2010. These cuts combined total an $18 million or 18% reduction in funding for library services. Libraries are part of our safety net—they are essential to life long learning, jobs and opportunity, quality of life and community empowerment.

TAKE ACTION-

1. Go to http://www.protectnylibraries.org/ and sign the petition.

2. Contact your elected officials and tell them to VOTE for Libraries. Go to:

History

Expansion Completed

Since the completion of the library expansion from 3,340 to 5,540 square feet we are enjoying the increased space in our adult section as well as the children's section of the library. Our new reading room provides quiet space for patrons to enjoy magazines, newspapers, and books. The historic Gill Room now is located in the basement in two rooms giving our patrons and visitors an enlarged space to do research on local history and geneology. Additional storage space has provided the Friends of the Library an area to have book sales. The new Margaret & O.E.S. Hedbring Community Room has provided the community with a beautiful place for meetings and programs.

Pre-School Story Hours

Pre-school story hour is held every Tuesday and Wednesday at 10:30 AM. Stories, crafts, movement, and a film are shown each week. All children from infants through 5 years of age are welcome.

Do not worry if your child does not sit still. They are welcome anyway. They will learn to be around other children and will enjoy the interaction even if they are too young to participate.

On Fridays at 10 a.m. a playgroup meets in the library for parents and pre-schoolers. This is a great chance to meet other parents, and for children to learn to play well with others.

No sign up is necessary for these programs.

Developmentally Disabled Programs

Hannie Varosey continues to conduct art programs for the developmentally disabled patrons of the library. They created and dedicated the Bird Feeder Sculpture in THE COMMONS and continue to keep the feeders full so we can enjoy the various birds during the winter months.
